Ghanaians Are Really Suffocating To Death, And Have Also Over Tightened Their Belts With No Adjustment Anymore.

Assembly member for Zingu electoral area, Hon. Wahab has raised some concerns on the recent proposed tariffs adjustment by ECG and GWCL which he thinks would affect most people.
                    Hon. Wahab

This what the assembly member writes:
Hello PURC, Ghanaians are looking up to you as the last resort and saviour during this excruciating economic hardship. Shockingly and very astonishingly, Ghanaians woke up to the outrageous proposals of tariffs increment by ECG and GWCL with a whopping 148% and 334% respectively.
Mind you, water, electricity and fuel are the lifelines and driving forces for every developed or developing nation like Ghana.
Rhetorical, but significantly, how many average government workers like teachers, nurses and CLOSSAG members can survive the above killer proposals ?
What is the percentage of salary increment for these average workers ?
When have salaries ever been increased by 100% or 200% in Ghana ?
In juxtaposition, what are the salary disparities between the workers of ECG and GWCL with the average public sector workers ?
Realistically, do these companies deserve this gargantuan quantum of tariffs adjustments ?
The answer is big NO.

Well, the above rhetorical questions are just to elicit our bases of accepting or outrightly rejecting their utopian proposals. In this economic crunch with stagnation of salaries, one would have thought that, the cost of these essential services would have been reduced to mitigate the burden of the citizens. Basically, this heartless and inhumane way of sending Ghanaians back to the ponds and streams as sources of drinking water is very draconian by GWCL. PURC, as a matter of urgency should remind GWCL that,"water is life" and should be made accessible and less costly for the citizenry. We cannot afford to go back to the erra of guinea worms and other water borne diseases of the 80s and early 90s.

PURC, as a regulator of these entities, your core mandate is to safeguard and protect the poor consumer of these services from extortion and exploitation by the service providers. Ghana is among the top African countries with high accessibility to electricity of over 80% coverage. This factor of power availability is attracting a lot of investors into the country, thereby generating revenue to the government.

In furtherance to that, proper  industrialisation depends on electricity, fuel, water and etc. So if these three key components are so expensive in our country, the industrial revolution will be a mirage.  Most of the European countries were industrialised in the 19th century because of the cheap power to the factories and the citizens. We must not as a nation lose focus on the sustainable development goals (SDGs) we subscribed to. The state has a responsibility of providing its citizens with accessible, quality and affordable water.

Conclusively, Ghanaians are really suffocating to death, and have also over tightened their belts with no adjustment anymore. PURC should therefore throw away the insensitive and unrealistic proposals from these two entities. The flimsy and weak points attributed to these outrageous proposals should be discarded without any merit.
Thank you.
