Wa: African Rising Project Gives Training To Farmers On Transforming African Agriculture Through Sustainable Intensification.

The Africa Rising Project has organized workshop to train farmers on the Sustainable Intensification Practices in the upper west region.
This training was given to over hundred farmers in the region and it was held at Queens Valley Hotel in Wa on Friday,20th May,2020.

Speaking to Sungmaale FM news room, the Researcher for CSIR, Mr. Emmanuel Tetteh Jumpal who was the presenter for the program outlined some of the reasons why the workshop is important, where he Practice the African Rising Project's(ARP) main aim is to improve the factors that influences the adoption of Sustainable Intensify Practices.

He highlighted some of the things to sustain farming practices, where he urged farmers to develop the habit of Row planting, though some farmers say it is labor demanding and slow. Adding that the African Rising Project has proposed to government to support companies to fabricate small farmer equipment to help make this practice move faster.

The African Rising Project has again made  Proposals to government to employ more agricultural workers, AEAs to visit farmers and to give education and support to farmers. And to get more means of transportation for workers to reach rural areas as well.
They call on Farmers to also educate each others on the modern farming practices.

Also, the project has made a proposal to government to increase the quantity of subsided fertilizer, and farmers should help government to sustain it in the country.
Farmers are encouraged to sustain farmer groups to be able to benefit from government/policy makers rather than doing things individually.
Speaking on Post harvest challenges, he said it will soon be over because they are again proposing to government to make buffer stock available to buy products from the farmers, where he also said the disconnect between producers and marketing could be addressed if famer groups should  use technology (mobile applications or online marketing strategies) to sell their products out of their communities.
Meanwhile, farmers are encouraged to get storage facilities in their communities whilst the African Rising Project is still proposing to government to support farmers with small scale storage facilities where they can store their commodities for a while.

Low farm productivity is observed among smallholder farmers, who are also confronted with the adverse effects of climate change such as rising temperature, drought, erosion, and poor soil fertility.
To mitigate the impact of these climate conditions on agricultural production, particularly for smallholder farmers, many climate-resilient agricultural production practices have been developed and disseminated to farmers.
One of which is Sustainable Intensify Practices(SIPs)/technologies aimed at increasing productivity by maximizing farm output from limited and deteriorating production resources.
Smallholder farmers from selected communities in northern Ghana were exposed to SIPs. Adoption of these practices is expected to maximize farm output and improve food security among rural households.
