SNNIT LAUNCHES SEED CAMPAIGN TO EMPOWER INFORMAL SECTOR WORKERS.

On August 30,2024, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) kicked off Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED) with a vibrant float through Wa, the capital of the Upper West Region. The campaign dubbed Operation- A-ton, aims to significantly increase enrollment among informal sector workers.

The acting Deputy Corporate Affairs,  Manager of SSNIT, Victoria Gifty Abaidoo drew special attention to the success of SEED initiative since it's establishment in 2023. Self-employed workers has enrolled up to 100,000 She said.

SSNIT has put effort to familiarize with informal workers hence design the Operation A-ton initiative  offering them the opportunity to register and secure a reliable retirement income. Gifty emphasized that workers have the flexibility to decide their monthly contribution and are eligible for various benefits which includes old age pensions, individual pensions, and survival lump sums in case of illness.

"This campaign, Operation-A-ton, is our way of showing that we are dedicated to the well-being of every worker in the country" said Gifty. "We want to eliminate the misconception that SSNIT is only for formal sector workers and make it clear that self-employed individuals can also benefit from our scheme."

To be a part of the SEED initiative, individuals simply need a National Identification Card and must be between the ages of 15 and 45. The scheme offers contribution through mobile money and authorized SSNIT agents, helping to combat old age poverty and ensure a stable future for all contributors.
